Message Does it increase the energy content of the fuel, or does it simply slow the burn rate, i.e., increased octane rating?

As far as I know, higher octane fuels don't contain any more energy per unit of fuel, but instead just burn slower, allowing higher compression ratios, blah, blah, blah, etc.

So what is the function of toluene when mixed with gasoline?
